Why Freelancing is the Ultimate Solution for Busy Moms

Picture this, fellow moms: you're juggling work and family, trying to find a balance that works for everyone. You've got meetings, deadlines, and a never-ending to-do list. And on top of it all, you want to be there for your kids, to see their first steps, hear about their day at school, and watch them grow up. You love your work, but the thought of leaving your baby (no matter your “baby’s” age) breaks your heart. It's a lot to handle, and if that scenario makes you feel a little sick with stress (like it did for me), then consider an alternative. When my son was born, I took a long break from work. But recently, I’ve been feeling that little call to create something, work towards something, and reestablish my identity beyond motherhood.

Enter freelancing. As a freelancer, you have the power to create your own schedule, work from home (or the local coffee shop - where I’m writing this post!), and choose projects that align with your interests and values. No more rushing out the door in the morning or missing out on precious family time. You can be there for your kids while still earning a paycheck.

But before you take the plunge, there are a few things to consider. First and foremost, you need to establish boundaries. Just because you work from home doesn't mean you're always available. Set office hours and stick to them. Leave the house if you must (I know I must! I have a Velcro toddler who has a hard time leaving me alone). This will not only help you manage your time but also signal to your clients that you're a professional and should be treated as such.

Second, prioritize self-care. It's easy to get caught up in the work-family balancing act and forget to take care of yourself. Make time for exercise, relaxation, and socializing. Take breaks when needed, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. And if you have one, make sure your partner supports your career and doesn’t let your job take the back burner just because it is less rigid than a traditional 9-5.

Finally, remember that freelancing is still work. While it may offer more flexibility, it also requires discipline and dedication. As I ease back into this career, I am definitely putting in the hours. Be realistic about how much work you can take on and plan accordingly. Don't take on more than you can handle, and don't sacrifice your family time for work.

So there you have it, fellow moms! Freelancing can give you the freedom and flexibility you need to be there for your kids while still earning a paycheck. And let's be real, isn't that the dream? No more awkward conversations with your boss about leaving early for your child's school play or rushing out the door to make it to daycare pickup on time. You can even take your laptop to the park and work on a bench while your kids play on the jungle gym. Talk about multi-tasking!

But remember, while freelancing offers a world of opportunities, it also demands a greater sense of responsibility and ownership over your work and schedule. It's important to set boundaries, prioritize self-care, and take breaks when needed. After all, even Supermom needs a break sometimes. So, take a deep breath, pour yourself a glass of wine (or a cup of coffee, depending on the time of day), and enjoy the ride. I can say from experience - freelancing may just be the best decision you ever make for yourself and your family.
